Reflecting on Recovery Month: What does Recovery Month Mean to You?

Everybody knows someone that has been negatively affected by alcohol or drugs, and Recovery Month is a time for celebrating the people in recovery from substance use problems and those people and services that have helped them on their journeys.

Recovery Month has grown over the years from just one service to being an international movement.  Recovery means different things to different people but all share that key message that recovery is possible, and recovery is worth celebrating!

In Derbyshire we know that people recover from alcohol and drug problems every day, some do this through the support of mutual aid groups like Alcoholics Anonymous, some with the help of specialist treatment services, some through our funded residential rehabilitation programmes, some through engagement with our excellent Derbyshire based recovery projects, some do so with the support of family, friends and other supports, and some need a little help from all of the above, and you know what, that’s OK! Regardless of how a person travels towards their recovery we believe that recovery is something to be proud of, something worth shouting about, something that should be celebrated.

For Recovery Month, we are proud to report on the efforts of our Derbyshire recovery projects and the people within them, each playing a crucial role in supporting individuals on their recovery journeys. These projects held various events in September, showcasing their commitment and the vibrant recovery projects in the county (keep an eye out for photos to follow!).

This article serves as a reminder of the importance of the work the projects do, and the importance of recognising Recovery Month can be found here: Recovery Month (September 2024) - Drink and Drugs News, there is a link within the article, to full length feature video – Everybody knows Somebody, which is a powerful film of 42 people talking about their experience of living with or someone else’s addiction and recovery.

As part of this reflection, we invite you to reflect on your own recovery, you may feel it appropriate to share some of your achievements here, or maybe you would rather celebrate in your own private way. But know that you are not alone, the Derbyshire Recovery Community extends our congratulations and respect to every one of you. If you do feel like sharing, please feel free to post here. Similarly, if you have ideas for events we might consider for next year’s recovery month, let us know ASCH.GRIDinfo@derbyshire.gov.uk

We know society is slowly catching up, stigma still exists but together we will continue to break down those challenges to recovery. We believe that we do this best by celebrating recovery and your support, understanding, and compassion are vital in helping us create a more inclusive and supportive environment for everyone. Together we are Growing Recovery In Derbyshire!
