The level 1 (provided by DACES) Drug and Alcohol Awareness Training is available online/county-wide. This nationally recognised qualification starts on Monday 21st October 2024 from 6.30pm and will last around 2 hours weekly run over a total of 8 weeks. A second opportunity to access the qualification is also being offered from Wednesday 6th November 2024.

The DACES tutor will run the online sessions on the same day each week and they will be 2 hours long with an expectation of around 20 mins homework to be completed before the next session.
The upcoming cohorts start:
Monday 21st October 2024 (sessions are on Mondays at 6.30-8.30pm on Microsoft Teams: 21st Oct, 28th Oct, 4th Nov, 11th Nov, 18th Nov, 25th Nov, 2nd Dec and final sessions on 9th Dec 2024)
Wednesday 6th November 2024 (sessions are on Wednesday at 6.30-8.30pm on Microsoft Teams: 6th Nov, 13th Nov, 20th Nov, 27th Nov, 4th Dec, 11th Dec and final sessions on 18th Dec 2024 – due to the 8 week date falling at Christmas, this will be condensed over 7 weeks)
Please note – this is a formal qualification, not training or a self-reflective course, and so requires commitment and input.
Level 1 Qualification Criteria:
The learner must:
- Have access to a computer
- Have an email address
- Be able to use Microsoft Teams and Microsoft Word
- Be able to commit every week for 8 weeks to 2 hours of evening online learning (6.30pm-8.30pm) one day each week, with approx. 20 mins of homework.
*If someone has not recently completed any adult education qualifications, they will need to attend a one off local ‘Making Choices’ face to face session with DACES (which we will support) so an assessment of readiness for the course can be completed (this is to ensure that if you’re not quite ready you’ll be supported to attend other qualifications beforehand, eg English or technology)
Level 1 in Substance Misuse Qualification – the finer details:
This qualification enables learners to develop a knowledge and understanding of the misuse of substances, including alcohol. Learners will also consider risk-taking behaviours associated with substance misuse that impact on health and wellbeing, whilst exploring prevention and resilience building.
The topics learners cover are:
- What substances are commonly misused and why
- Understand the personal and social effects of substance misuse
- Understand the perceptions and responses to substance misuse
- Understand ways to promote health choices and resilience building
